Rupert's Analysis Process - Overview

Rupert's Analysis Process

My analysis process uses a collection of tools and techniques for analysing, enunciating and defining situations and systems with a view to solving a problem or improving a process. These tools and techniques have been developed over many years by some clever people. I call it my process simply because I'm demonstrating a way of using these tools and techniques in concert to achieve an outcome. There is no one correct way of applying the tools and techniques. They are to be used to in any order - the only criteria is that they are helpful in understanding or solving a particular issue or situation. The analysis process includes:

  1. A statement of intent - what the analysis activity aims to achieve, and a plan to deliver,
  2. Rich pictures for capturing details in complex, undefined situations,
  3. User stories,
  4. A root definition which describes what a system is and what it aims to achieve, guided by the mnemonic CATWOE,
  5. Business capability models (BCM) as a way to represent an enterprise,
  6. Heat maps to show system and organisational boundaries within BCMs, system diagrams and metrics,
  7. Business process models,
  8. Tech Tools (Technique Tools) - Risks, issues, threats and opportunities (RITO) list - The Prioritisation grid - Ishikawa diagrams.
  9. Requirements,
  10. Action plan.
